Bren is the deputy manager of the canteen. Although we don't find out until the second series, Bren is married to an alcoholic called Martin. He made one appearance at the end of "Gamble". Off screen, Bren told him she wanted a divorce.
It is hinted throughout series one that she has feelings for Tony but nothing comes of this until the middle of series two, where after a few close calls, they finally end up together and plan to move to Scotland.
Bren's mother, Petula, is a regular visitor to the canteen but wasn't always around. As she puts it herself, "I put her in an orphanage and lost the address." They don't have the best relationship but Bren is sad when Petula dies.
Bren is a caring person who always tries to help the others with their problems but isn't very confident at sorting out her own troubles. She often has trouble with words, confusing them with other, often not so similar words, such as "What are those things like cucumbers...suffragettes!"
