dinnerladies is a comedy set in the canteen of a factory and follows the lives of five female canteen workers and their male manager.
It began on BBC1 in 1998 and ran for two series'. The first had six episodes and the second had ten.
The whole of both series' were filmed only using the canteen set. Other locations were often talked about, such as other areas of the factory, but were never seen. During series 2, there were two occasions where a T.V quiz studio and a hospital were used but they were only seen on a television.
dinnerladies features canteen manager Tony, deputy manager Bren and four other of the canteen staff, Dolly, Jean, Anita and Twinkle. Alongside them is Stan the handyman, Philippa the Human Resources manager and Petula, Bren's mum. There are also a few other characters who often pop in to the canteen and many people who are mentioned but never seen, like Big Willy and Harry from packing and countless celebrities Petula claims to know!
The show was written by and starred Victoria Wood and, although there are only 16 episodes, it is still now a very popular comedy and can still be seen regularly on UKTV Gold. It was known for its hilarious one-liners and its running jokes.
